Soaps

Medicine River Trading Company also features several hand made soaps including WoodSpirits Ltd. and Montana Sweetgrass.

They use only natural (agriculture or mineral) ingredients in every facet of their formulas: the soap base, the color, as well as the scent. The coconut and olive oils that compose the soap base are fresh, 100% food grade. This, we feel, preserves the vitamin and mineral content of the oils. Their soaps are not milled, because milling removes some of the glycerin, which is a natural humectant (draws moisture to the skin). Therefore, these soaps are softer than most.

MRTC relies on the help of other families to produce small batches of hand stirred and cut soaps. This allows production of a very beautiful, carefully made soap, and it allows the families to earn a healthy income in a healthy environment in their own homes. You can imagine how wonderful their homes must smell!

Who says that just because you've been in camp for a week you have to smell like a buffalo?

Beads

Over the last several years we, at Medicine River Trading Company, have had inquiries from many clients regarding "Trade Beads" appropriate to the different periods of interest. We have looked for a reliable source for these beads that we could feel comfortable in offering at Medicine River. For this reason we are proud to add Old North Trail Beads to our list of associates.

Old North Trail offers quality beads, many from the original manufacturers. We have found all the patterns and types of beads offered by them to be in perfect keeping with the beads traded from 1700-1900.

All the beads pictured below and listed on the price page were shipped into San Francisco in the 1890's. We were able to authenticate this time period from the shipping crates they were shipped in. This collection of beads were in the original shipping crates until 1970 at which time they went through a flood. Only two of the ten shipping crates survived the flood. The two remaining crating still have all of their original shipping labels. These shipping labels have allowed us to establish the history and age of the beads. Our research has lead us to believe that these beads were produced in the late 1880's or early 1890's. We are therefore very confident in saying that these beads are original, un-circulated, hand wound, trade beads from the 1880's and 1890's.
