Brownies for a Valentine

My mother gave me this recipe when I was 10 or so, learning to cook.  It is the ULTIMATE Chocolate Lover's brownie from scratch.  They are quick and easy to mix and I use them a lot for those bake sale/room mother/church bazaar type things.  Sometimes I double the batch and bake in a 10x13 inch pan.

  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup soft butter or margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped nut s(optional)

Grease an 8x8 inch pan.  Preheat oven to 350 F.

Sift flour, sugar, salt and cocoa in a 3-quart mixing bowl.  Add butter, eggs, and vanilla. Using an electric mixer, beat for 2 minutes on medium speed.  Stir in nuts, if desired.

Turn into prepared pan and spread out to even thickness.  Bake 20-22 minutes or until barely done.  Mark, cool in pan on cake rack, then cut and enjoy.

I sprinkle powdered sugar on top for decoration or frost if you want.
