"The Patriot" Pipe Tomahawks
With the increasing interest in the Revolutionary and the French & Indian brought on by such motion pictures as "The Patriot" we have seen a rise in customers seeking a quality reproduction of the pipe tomahawks of this period. There are several reproductions of these period hawks, but most are basically brass or plated brass suitable for the most part for pow-wows and as additions to someone's collection. Though we can have our ABS Master Knifemaker, Ed Caffrey make you a clone for the "Patriot " hawk starting at about $500.00 this has been a little pricey for the average reenactor. We are also able to offer a quality product at a more reasonable price. The hawks shown are made here in the US of high quality polished iron complete with custom fitted wooden stems. These stems (handles) are hardwood but are not maple! They are ready for smoking, with 18 - 19" long handles. These hawks will service well for the reenactor, but no matter what you see in Mr. Gibson's movie these were not designed for throwing.
* Note all heads have factory finished edge and finish. The stems are bare wood. Ed Caffrey will detail out the heads, oxidize the heads to a forged blue/black color (as shown on tomahawks 1,2 and 5) and stain the stems for an additional $25.00. Please email (medriver@3rivers.net) to order these hawks or anything else you saw in the movie "The Patriot" that struck your fancy. We can make it or get it. From the Forge Medicine River is proud to offer traditional hand forged items from some of today's finest blacksmiths and knifemakers, including ABS Master Knifemaker Ed Caffrey. | For more than a decade Ed Caffrey has produced knives and other cutlery.
His idea has always been to produce the toughest, best cutting knives possible.
Ed believes that a knife must be first capable of performing its basic function:
to cut and cut well. This, however, does not mean that a functional
knife cannot also be a thing of beauty. After trying nearly every material
and method available, Ed believes that the toughest, best cutting blades
can only be produced through the proper forging and heat treating of the
given steel. With this in mind, all of Ed's blades are produced via
the forging method. Bearing Quality 52100 is Ed's steel of choice;
he also uses 5160 and produces a wide variety of Damascus.
His knives have appeared in national as well as international publications. Ed was also the first person in the state of Montana to earn the American Bladesmith Society rating of Master Bladesmith. He is one of less than 80 nationwide to have reached this level of expertise. Ed not only produces modern hunting and utility cutlery, but also "Buckskinner" blades to include friction folders and tomahawks. Ed also offers classes in Bladesmithing and produces ornamental ironwork. The Gallery images include a Wire Damascus Bowie, a Nickel Damascus drop point with amber and fossilized ivory as well as a tomahawk/drop point hunter set. |
