Colonial long hunters, revolutionary soldiers and mountain men alike all learned from the native Americans that meat on the trail could best be carried dried. Commonly called jerky and pemmican these dried meats were the mainstay of men (and women) on the trail. Though all types of meats were dried buffalo, deer and beef were staples for white men on the trail. We have not been able to find a source for deer jerk or sausages but we have located a Montana company that produces an exemplary assortment of buffalo and beef products that would be accepted in any traditional camp.
